Plot Summary
Herr Muller is a well-known oboist with forty years of experience. However, one day, during rehearsal, he is told by Herr Feldner that Herr Muller is only known for his playing the oboist. This statement causes Herr Muller to reflect on his past, causing him to realize that he is only known for his instrument. Herr Muller is determined to prove the man wrong. He is eating food at a restaurant and tells the waiter that the world will finally know who Herr Muller is for his next rehearsal. For the next performance, Herr Muller is the conductor. He begins to direct the band to play, but it is under a piece of music he composed. As Herr Muller conducts the orchestra, he feels his music possess him. Herr Muller starts sweating as he directs the band on how to play. As he performs the music, everyone notices that he isn't instructing the first oboist to play. Herr Muller resists the urge to include the oboist. He finishes the piece, and the room goes silent. He then notices that the first oboist has fallen asleep since Herr Muller didn't conduct him to play in the orchestra. Herr Muller tiredly turns to the audience and receives a round of applause.
