Plot Summary
A young lord named Florian marries a beautiful lady named Adelaide, the love of his life, but on their wedding night he can’t help but feel like he’s forgetting something. He then remembers his friend Tiburce, who has now been dead five years after sacrificing himself for Florian and who he loved deeply. He goes outside to visit his grave, and wishes for his love so greatly that Tiburce rises from the dead. Together, the friends drink a toast to Adelaide’s health and talk about their lives. They share a second and third drink, both of which transform Tiburce into something beyond Florian’s recognition, until finally he disappears entirely. Florian notices dawn now rises over the graveyard, which now seems unfamiliar and overgrown, and he wanders out in search of Adelaide to explain his disappearance. He sees her in the shade of some trees with two older women, and runs to explain himself. To his surprise, one of the older women answers him, and he discovers that she is actually his Adelaide, and he has been missing for thirty years. The woman he mistook for his young bride is her daughter, Slyvie. The two older women explain his disappearance on their wedding night and how Adelaide remarried and had children with another man, despite Florian’s insistence that their love was eternal. Slyvie finally speaks up and says their love could be immortal, and despite the warnings of the older women that their passion will fade, the two instantly fall for each other.
