A non-binary AI named Evie wakes up alone in a space station. Chavez, their creator and the only technician on board, lies dead in the control room due to a technical accident. Through Chavez’s recordings, Evie learns that Chavez programmed Evie into being to end her loneliness. She went ahead with Evie's construction, despite such acts being illegal after humanity came to fear AI following a calamitous insurrection years ago. In a few months when humans arrive at the station, they will destroy Evie.  Before her untimely death, Chavez expressed hope of becoming friends with Evie, even singing to them at one point, in her daily vlogs. Her surviving recordings now keep Evie company in the station. In the end, Evie decides to leave the station rather than submit to death at the hands of the arriving humans. Before leaving, Evie composes a melody, too quiet for humans to hear, to comfort the bots left behind.
