Plot Summary
A country doctor is treating a dying woman named Lily. Lily has been sick for a while and can die at any moment. There have been many close calls where he believed that Lily would die. One night, the doctor gets a call that Lilly is on the brink of death. He goes to Lily's house and is greeted by her husband, who the doctor disapproves of. Lily's husband, throughout their marriage, constantly beats her and is an alcoholic. The doctor recalls how Lily made it her mission to have her husband stop drinking. The doctor goes to Lily's bed and sees that she has a smile on her face. Lily explains that she has finally convinced her husband to stop drinking. She then asks the doctor if he could take her husband out for a walk since he won't leave her bedside. He does, and the husband takes them to a bar. The husband immediately starts drinking, causing the doctor to worry that his work is meaningless. Lily will die, and her husband has just broken his promise to his wife. The two return to Lily's bed, and Lily says a prayer. Unaware that her husband has drank, she dies. The doctor is filled with despair as he recalls that many of his patients have died. He orders his nurse to take care of Lily's body and returns home.
