Plot Summary
Mike, an Italian immigrant, has been renting out a space to another Italian immigrant named Vincent. Mike never kept records of the money owed as he believed Vincent would pay since he is Italian. Unfortunately, Vincent owes Mike $300. Mike's wife Dolores tells him to demand the money. However, when Mike visits Vincent, Vincent claims that he's already paid. Mike returns home defeated and decides to take Vincent to court. Mike's wife laughs at him. Vincent is dealing with corrupt people who will do anything to keep the money, lawyers are expensive, and Mike never kept records of the money owed. However, Mike is confident that he will win as he believes that the truth overcomes everything. He is so optimistic that he decides to defend himself, which amuses his wife even more as Mike speaks little English. Regardless of his wife's disapproval, Mike goes through with the plan. On the day of the trial, Mike is humiliated. The people laugh at his broken English. He has no evidence and is defending himself. When Vincent is brought to the stand, Mike asks if he paid. Once again Vincent lies and this deception causes Mike to explode in anger. Mike grabs a chair, threatening to kill Vincent. Vincent breaks down and confesses that he never paid. The court manages to control Mike, and the judge reprimands Mike for his violence. However, Vincent continues to admit his guilt. The judge is about to sentence Mike to spend a couple of days in jail for his outburst when Vincent again confesses that he did it. The judge, stuck in a dilemma, decides to let Mike free of all charges. The judge tells Vincent to pay back Mike, and Vincent agrees. When Mike leaves the courtroom, he is overjoyed, but his wife is embarrassed by her husband's behavior in the courtroom.
