Walt is an aging, arthritic man in a steady if not bland marriage. When his youngest daughter, Rosie, returns home in an attempt to escape her own marriage, her mother Helen welcomes her with open arms. Walt, on the other hand, struggles to empathize with his daughter and finds himself frustrated with her indecisiveness about her marriage and the rest of her life. He blames his and Helen's babying of Rosie when she was young, but despite his self-scapegoating, he continues to lash out at his daughter. His anger climaxes when he comes home to his daughter and her husband having sex in her childhood room. Walt records them with his ever-present cassette tape and shows his wife afterward, telling her he wants them gone. His action isolates himself from Helen and, consequentially, Rosie. Walt peeks into the bathroom where Rosie is taking a bath and leaning against Helen's thigh. He leaves, listening to the water pouring down the drains.
