Plot Summary
A man is sleeping in his house in Tokyo when his hunger wakes both he and his wife of two weeks up at 2 am. They go to the kitchen to see what they can eat, but there’s nothing. He offers to go to a restaurant with her, but she says that people shouldn’t eat out after midnight. Seized by a strange feeling, he suddenly tells her about the time that he robbed a bakery when he was in college. He came into the shop with his then-best friend, sat and listened to a Wagner album with the owner of the shop, and then carried enough bread away to feed them for five or six days. His wife says that he must have gotten a curse when he did that, which makes sense because she’s been feeling strange ever since they got married. To resolve the curse, they must rob another bakery. They go in search of a bakery, but everything’s closed. Finally, they pull into a McDonald's, where they demand that the staff give them thirty Big Macs. The staff offers to just give them the money, but the couple refuses: they need to get bread. They pull off their heist and return to their home, where they’re finally able to sleep soundly.
