Plot Summary
One day, a couple goes to see the kangaroo exhibit at a zoo. There are four kangaroos: a male, two females, and a baby kangaroo. The couple has been planning to go see the baby kangaroo for at least a month. They just hadn’t found the right time to go—until today. The boyfriend felt the lack of good days to go was a function of life. He possesses a “that’s life” mindset. He views life’s process and inconveniences as just parts of life. His girlfriend is very excited to see the baby kangaroo. She spends the entire train ride to the zoo asking her boyfriend questions about their trip to the zoo. She asks if it may be dead, ill, or held by it bs mentally unstable kangaroo mother. The boyfriend dismisses these ideas. He is impressed by the number of scenarios that she has conjured up. The girlfriend makes a big deal out of this being her only chance to see a baby kangaroo. He agrees that this is likely her only chance. Yet, he is not as bothered by the idea of the kangaroo not being there or not being a baby. She asks if he thinks he will have another chance to see a baby kangaroo. He says he doesn’t know. She explains that this is why she is worried. He responds aggressively that there are plenty of things he won’t ever see, like a giraffe giving birth. She says she is making a big deal because it is a baby kangaroo. He gives up on the argument and skims through a paper. They arrive at the exhibit and the kangaroo is well, though bigger than in the newspaper. It was more of a mini kangaroo than a baby. This is upsetting to the girlfriend. He wants to console her but there isn’t anything that can console her or change the fact that the kangaroo isn’t the baby she expected. He goes to the snack bar and gets some ice cream for the two of them. They talk more about how the kangaroo is not a baby. They try to see which female kangaroo is the mother. They are essentially identical. They find the male kangaroo in the exhibit. He is staring at the food trough. Throughout this, the “baby” kangaroo raced around the enclosure, oblivious to everything, The girlfriend asks why kangaroos hop fast. The boyfriend responds it is so they can evade their enemies. He further explains that humans are the enemies. The girl continues to ask questions about the kangaroo. The boyfriend answers as best he can. He goes to get them lunch at a hotdog stand that is playing Stevie Wonder and Billy Joel. When he returns, his girlfriend is excited. The kangaroo is a baby as it is protected in its mother’s pouch! She is very excited. The boyfriend feels the sight made the trip worth their effort. The girlfriend talks more about the kangaroos. She asks more questions. Her boyfriend responds. They ate their hotdogs and then walked away from the kangaroo enclosure. Before they left, the male kangaroo was still staring into the food trough while the mysterious female with no baby now leaped around the enclosure. The mother and baby had become like one. The girlfriend asks her boyfriend if he would like to go get a beer. He says yes.
