Plot Summary
A middle-aged man named Hymie leaves a billiards hall at night, too anxious to continue playing. Convinced that everyone on the street is watching him, he hurries home and locks all the doors behind him. When he’s finally convinced that he’s alone, he takes a deep breath and assures himself that no one from his gang has found out that he snitched on them. Just then, the phone rings. It’s his gang leader, McGowan, who tells him that another member named Joe Bananas snitched on them and they’re going to punish him. Hymie breathes a sigh of relief and gets in the car McGowan sent for him before realizing it could be another trap, but it’s already too late. They take him back to the billiards hall and again he convinces himself that there’s no way they could know of his guilt, especially when he sees Joe Bananas tied up in McGowan’s office. Someone covers him with a blanket and Hymie and McGowan go out to the car, where the former feels bad about putting his feet on innocent Joe’s body. For a moment he almost considers telling the truth, but McGowan starts laughing about how clever he was for figuring Joe out, so Hymie starts laughing at his obliviousness. When they get to the bog, McGowan tells Hymie that he’ll be the one to finish off Joe. Hymie is so guilty that he can’t do it, though, and the other men reveal there was nothing beneath the blanket the whole time. McGowan has Hymie trapped.
