Plot Summary
On the way to Edith’s family reunion in Manitoba, Edith begs her husband, Jack, to not drink whiskey and to be a gentleman. Their six-year-old son Brian is also in the car. Jack asserts that the Stiles family doesn’t respect him, and they are sure to make fun of him again for driving a nine-year-old car. The couple decides that they need a secret signal to use to say when they want to leave, and Jack says he will hum the tune to “God Save the Queen.” Upon arriving at the party, Jack remarks that the Stiles family must have emptied the jails and asylums to achieve such a large turnout, and Edith leaves to converse with the women of the family. Jack reluctantly joins the men, and their son Brian is forced to join his cousins, who he doesn’t quite know. Random conversation takes place among the men until one of Edith’s brothers comments on how the black color of his new car shows all the dust on it. Another brother asks Jack what he is driving, and Jack retorts that it is the same car he drove last year and the year before, all the way back to the year he and Edith got married. Jack realizes he is drunk but notices that Brian is not playing with his cousins— the cousins have teased him too much, and he is shy. Jack calls him over and encourages him to go back and play, removing his tie so it won’t get in the way. Brian says he is wearing his good pants and can’t get them dirty, and Jack tells him to take them off. Edith’s brothers try to get Jack to stop pressuring his son, and they devolve into another argument about money. Walking down the porch steps, Edith sees Jack punching her brother Albert in the face, causing blood to gush down his face. She runs over and shouts for Jack to stop, saying that he is drunk and disgusting before slapping him across the face for the first time ever. Jack tells her Albert was talking about the hundred dollars she borrowed from him, saying he had nothing to do with it, and Edith retorts that Albert’s money kept them from going hungry. Jack angrily leaves Brian and Edith and walks away. By the time everyone has left the reunion that night, Edith and Brian wait for Jack to come back. As Edith tells her brother Bob that Jack may not come back, she hears him singing “God Save the Queen” outside of the house.
