Plot Summary
Todd is the divisional director for a business. He delivers an exhortation to his colleagues about their march performance stats. He explains that as they are being paid and have a job to do, the job should be done better.
He explains that one way to do a job is to do it negatively. He gives an example of cleaning a shelf. He says that anyone can be brought in to replace an employee who does not clean the shelf well. So, all employees should seek to clean the shelf in a way that benefits them. Thus, the best way to clean a shelf is to be positive. He extends this analogy to the act of moving a beached whale—a feat he did once. He says that it was impossible to move the whale with even a neutral mindset. He and others had to be ‘psyched’ up and positive to finally move the whale. In this vein, the employees should stop questioning right or wrong and being doubtful. Instead, they should simply be happy and proud of their good work. He explains that everyone around the business should minimize their grumbling and self-doubt when doing tasks that are not the most pleasant. He explains that it would be suicidal to let self-doubt ruin their progress.
He reminds his colleagues of the great week their colleague Andy had back in October. Despite how Andy has become withdrawn and disconsolate since October. However, his numbers are no longer monitored because of that week. Todd mentions that Andy could not have had such a great week in October if he had been self-doubting and negative. He mentions that if Andy’s numbers do fall off, he will call him.
Todd says that he presumes the cause for Andy’s depressive actions lies in his feelings of guilt and self-doubt about his actions in October. Todd thinks it is a shame that Andy had done such incredible work only to spend his time upset about it now. Todd asks if the actions he asked Andy to do in Room 6 will be undone if Andy is upset. The answer is no. He reiterates that those people from that day in Room 6 will not be walking out okay, as no one ever walks out of Room 6 okay. Despite the things they are asked to do in Room 6, Todd urges his colleagues to do them positively and without self-doubt. He concludes his message by saying that all will be well and that if anyone has doubts, they may come to look at the picture of him and the whale that he helped move with a positive mindset.
