Plot Summary
A woman enters into the home of Mr. Pernille, a recently deceased rich man who’s son has employed the woman to eat the sins of Mr. Pernille. Sin eating involves touching some sort of food to the dead person in order to absolve them of their sins so that they can enter the land “West of the Nile.” The woman requires a very specific set up in order to perform this ritual as well as a signed contract involving the silence of the client’s family. Part of the setup requires very particular flowering herbs to be set on the table and fancy table furnishings. She reminisces about when she found out that she had this ability, eating almond cookies for the sins of her grandma, who died while sitting with her at the kitchen table. There is a long history of sin eaters being used by cultures in history — all treating the sin eaters as people to use, but not to interact with. She thinks about how they have been treated historically and how she operates now in lavishness. As she eats the sins of Mr. Pernille she begins to feel heavy — something that is common when eating sins. She tastes each one, all having a unique flavor, and finally finishes the meal. She receives her payment and then goes to the gravesite of Mr. Pernille where she plants the herbs used in the ceremony on his grave. She throws up the food that she ate on behalf of Mr. Pernille and lets it be absorbed by the ground.
