Plot Summary
Mr. Head and his grandson Nelson are going into Atlanta. Mr. Head wants to quell Nelson’s pride about being born in Atlanta by showing him how bad the city supposedly is. Mr. Head says that Nelson won’t like Atlanta because it has a lot of black people. While they are on the train, a black man walks down the aisle. Mr. Head points him out but Nelson does not recognize him as black unti lMr. Head says so. When they arrive in Atlanta, Mr. Head takes them in a large loop so that he always knows where they are from the train station. Nelson catches on and comments that they have made a circle. They decide to go another way to make a different loop, but Mr. Head forgets to turn left for a while to make the loop. As they are walking, they realize that they are in a part of Atlanta with majority black residents and commerce. Realizing that they are lost, Nelson asks a black woman how to get to the train station. She tells them where to go to take a street car. Mr. Head then scolds Nelson. They manage to get to a part of town with more white people, but they are still lost. While they are resting, Nelson falls asleep. To try to quell his perceived pride, Mr. Head goes across the street and bangs a trashcan to wake Nelson up and make him think he is alone. When he wakes up, Nelson runs off and accidentally runs into an old woman. The old woman fakes an injury. As Mr. Head walks up, Nelson runs to him. The old woman tells him that he will pay for the damages he’s caused. Mr. Head claims to not know Nelson. As they are walking, they arrive in a suburb and get directions to the train stop nearby. On their way they encounter a plaster effigy of a black person. Mr. Head and Nelson make up and make their way home.
