Plot Summary
Twenty-year-old Peter moves into his eighteen-year-old girlfriend Heddy's farmhouse when she becomes pregnant. Freeman Farms, run by Heddy's gruff older brother Otto, sits on the family's apple orchard. While energetic but elusive Heddy leaves each day to take classes at a local college, Otto and Peter operate the apple orchard. Peter feels intimidated by Otto but isn’t sure why. When Otto puts Peter in charge of creating a website for the farm, Peter reaches out to the various farmhands, mostly seasonal pickers or college students. He meets Steph, a shy woman whom Otto recently hired to work the farm along with her husband. In their brief conversation about the potential website, Steph is uniquely protective of her young son, Zack, who has a mysterious bruise that suddenly starts to bleed. Peter covertly reads Heddy’s journals, carves designs into apples, and observes the strange intimacy between Otto and Heddy. Otto is playfully vulgar with Heddy. Neither sibling cares about being nude in front of the other. They hold long conversations which end as soon as Peter enters the room. Heddy is a diligent, eager student but becomes more withdrawn after she fails a French test. When Peter smells cigarette smoke in Heddy’s wake, he becomes suspicious of the long hours she spends at school. One night, Peter hears what he believes to be coyotes in the orchard. When he goes to investigate the noise, he finds Otto drunk with two naked women. One of them is Steph, the farmhand Peter met earlier. Otto invites Peter to stay and roughly kisses Steph before he forces her to kiss an increasingly nervous Peter. The other woman, whom Peter does not recognize, takes a photo of them. When Peter crawls back into bed with Heddy, he wakes her to suggest that they move into their own place so she can focus on school. Heddy says it's fine; she’ll just work for Otto. She falls asleep. Otto, Peter, and Heddy wake the next morning and begin their day as usual.
