Plot Summary
In a country house in November, four young people are sharing each other's company at Alec’s house. He invited his friends Tom and Dotty Stewart and his other friend Love Baker to stay with him for a week. Tom and Dotty were married. However, in their youth, Dotty and Alec had been lovers. Dotty is content with her marriage but thinks fondly of her time with Alec. She feels like she should think only of Tom, as he is her husband. At the same time, Alec is admiring Love. Love is aware of his gaze. Love, however, is infatuated with Tom.
Alec thinks about how he is very privileged and comes from generational wealth. He remembers that he upset his mother when he took his fathers fortune after his death. He finds himself to be a coward and wishes that he could convince Love that he could satisfy her. He doesn’t want his money to be his only attractive quality. Love thinks about Tom. She is lonely and humorous but will not admit that she is a sensitive woman. She remembers her time with Tom when they were younger. They had been extremely close though they were not lovers. After their time together she went to Paris and forgot about him. During that time he married Dotty.
Tom was wishing he could go to bed with Love and that he had slept with her during their time together. However, he concludes that Dotty was more marriable and that Love was the kind of girl that ought to be in a man’s past. Love wished that she could have a committed relationship, but was too proud to admit that.
The group begin dancing and a flirtatious banter ensues. Tom asks Love to dance and Love declines. Meanwhile, Alec and Dotty are dancing. Love feels that she will go crazy if she remains inside, despite the fact that it is raining. Love runs outside and Tom goes after her. Love falls and Tom helps her up. He kisses her neck and Love pulls away. She doesn’t know why he was not affectionate to her years ago. Outside the door to the house, Love kisses Tom back. Alec sees. Alec is distraught as he loves Love and he knows that Tom will not treat her right. Even though Tom is his best friend, he is incredibly upset. Dotty begins to look for Alec. Love says that Alec must’ve gone to bed. Alec actually had run off into the night and climbed up a tree. Alec struggles to understand who betrayed him: Love or Tom. He decides to go back to the house and sort things out for himself. However, as he makes his way to where the road should have been, he realizes he is lost. He bargains with his mind that he will let go of Love if he may return safely.
Alec eventually makes his way back to the house. Once there, he knows nothing in his mind has settled but decides that he has a decision to make: confront Love now or never bring it up. He finds himself mindlessly going up the stairs and opening the door to her room. He wakes her up and asks if she is Tom’s mistress. Love denies the accusation. Alec, however, reveals to her what he saw. He expresses that he loves her very much and needs to know the truth. Alec begins to unravel. Love expresses concern for his health as is soaking and was out in the cold. Alec continues to accuse her of loving Tom even though she denies this repeatedly. She feels obligated to comfort him. He proposes and she accepts. She wants to belong to someone though she knows that really, Alec belongs to her. She thinks it is actually wrong that people belong to each other. However, Love knew how badly Alec need her and simultaneously, how badly she herself needed to be needed.
The next morning at breakfast, Love is late. Everyone reacts differently. Alec is anxious. Dotty is indifferent and is admiring Alec. Tom was waiting in anticipation for the game of revisiting his past relationship with Love to begin.
Love enters. She engages mainly with Alec. She thinks of her past with Tom and what happened the night previously. She knows she was confronted with the passage of time and her memories of the past. She knows she kissed the man her old companion had become and she knows she could have a multitude of different futures with Alec. She decides to no longer be implicit in her future as she agrees to never again revisit the past. She announces that she and Alec have news to share as she holds his hand.
