On an early winter morning, a woman wakes up in a hospital room after giving birth to her son. Her husband is in the room, and she tells him about the overwhelming happiness she feels. After he leaves, she continues to marvel at the newfound beauty in everything, believing that this may be one of the most wonderful moments in her life. A few hours later, a nurse comes and brings in her sleeping son. The mother looks into the face of her newborn and is captivated by his serene expression. Unable to put it into words, she realizes his facial expression is an effect of his total innocence and utter newness to the world. The next time a nurse brings in her son, his face is a dark red as he cries and has lost all of its previous serenity. The mother understands that she will never see that first face again.
