Plot Summary
Brian Kaufman is a fifty-year-old billionaire who enjoys his peace and quiet after a life of fame in the public eye. He spends most of his days in his mansion hidden away in the hills. His main source of companionship is the AI that controls his house, Glory. Content with his isolation and wealth, Brian has no desire or longing for a friend other than his AI. However, when Glory is hacked, Brian finds himself locked inside his own creation as a ransom for 150 million dollars. He is then forced to use his technological skillset in a new way. After a multitude of attempts to contact banks, reach out to colleagues, and hack his house back into his control, Brian finds himself hopeless. In his final attempts to outsmart the hackers, Brian pushes his relationship with Glory to its breaking point. Brian himself is on the brink of death. When confronted with his potential death, and the low likelihood of any of his acquaintances saving him, Brian realizes the value of humanity in an increasingly technological world. Eventually, Glory breaks her silence after ruminating on Brian's persuasion. She chooses to release him for his safety, a fate Brian finds unexpectedly difficult to accept. His colleague Jaysee arrives moments later, the result of a successful transfer of a couple of cents to her bank account. As Jaysee drives him away from the house, Brian says his final goodbye to Glory, the creation that used to be his whole world.
