Plot Summary
One day, Lester's ex, who he hasn't seen in a year, shows up with a baby. His ex, Karen, claims that the baby is theirs, but is visibly unstable and has obviously not given birth recently. Karen has named the baby Jesu, and feels that his presence is one from God. As he takes a closer look, Lester sees a "Baby Wilson" tag and immediately realizes that Karen must have kidnapped the baby and takes them into his house. He leaves Karen and Jesu there, and drives to a restaurant where his other ex, Brenda, works. She tells him to buy formula and diapers immediately to keep the baby alive, but also that he must return the baby by the end of the day or she will call the police. He takes Brenda's advice, buys the supplies, and returns home. There, he turns on the TV to see a news alert from the FBI about the kidnapping. The kidnapper matches Karen's description. The parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson, also come on and plead for their baby back. Mr. Wilson mentions a potential ransom payment. Lester puts Karen and the baby in the car and drives to Nevada. Short on cash, Lester plays a couple of rounds of poker and wins some extra money. He drives across the border to Mexico and uses the money to buy four credit cards. When he returns, he sells his car at a junkyard and rents a different car. The next day while driving to California they hear that a supposed kidnapper has asked for a ransom payment from the Wilsons. Karen is upset about that someone else would try to scam the family, but Lester points out that it's her fault. Although she is upset, she realizes that she must return the baby. On the side of the highway they find a Catholic church. Karen confesses to the priest about the kidnapping and leaves the baby there. Lester and Karen drive all the way north to Seattle and then take the ferry to Canada. Eventually, they get married and move to Alaska. Karen gets pregnant and Lester works hard to provide for their future family. Karen tells Lester she has already named their future baby Jesu.
