In search of her lost young collie named Rollie, a thirteen-year-old girl feigns a look of calmness. She knows her mother had warned her about being responsible for a dog, and brainstorms places where he could be.
Suddenly, she remembers that their neighbors had shot another dog that had attacked their sheep in the past, and sprints for their farm in fear that her dog would meet the same fate.
On the way there, she hears a shot ring out and she screams and falls to her knees in despair. She experiences anguish, and suddenly feels much older than her thirteen years.
Luckily, she follows the sound and sees Rollie bounding towards her. However, she pushes him away and calls him a bad dog in order to discipline him. The dog’s dejectedness towards her behavior forces her to forgive Rollie, and they prance home together.
She gets home just in time for supper, and happily enjoys the moment, feeling just like her thirteen-year-old carefree self again.
