Plot Summary
A woman reflects on the misfortune her boyfriend, Beebee, has faced in his life: after being orphaned at six weeks old, his orphanage burned down, and after finally being adopted, his parents were killed in a plane crash. Although Beebee and his girlfriend have been dating for a few years, she believes he has only truly been in love once, with a woman named Stella, who was his fourth foster mother when he was twelve. Beebee’s girlfriend thinks to herself that Beebee must see Stella when he looks at her, asks her to tie her hair up, and wear blue dresses. Beebee often tells his girlfriend stories about his past and talks about how he eventually dropped out of the seventh grade to help Stella with her “baby farm” at home, where she cared for people’s babies. One day, he came home from school, the house full of babies and stinking of urine, but Stella was nowhere to be found. Beebee began to attend to the babies, changing their diapers and giving them snacks, and when Stella came out from her bedroom, she explained that her husband, Bud, left and never showed up for work. Beebee and Stella spend their time playing board games and playing in the snow. When Bud returns, Beebee wakes to hear him and Stella fighting, which devolves into Bud beating Stella violently. For some reason Beebee does not understand, Stella looks at him with contempt. The day before he is to leave, Beebee’s girlfriend finds out that Beebee is going away again for a three-month job. She thinks that he is pushing her until she will decide to leave him, but she tells him that it might be time to stabilize their commitment to each other. However, Beebee says he doesn’t want to talk about any arrangements for the future. Beebee’s girlfriend reflects on the rest of Beebee’s story: he begins to steal random items from Stella, like her silver charm bracelet, and when he realizes she is pregnant, she tells him that she’s sorry that she can’t be his foster mother anymore and the stealing has nothing to do with it.
