Plot Summary
In an unknown American town of the distant future, a mother is visited by Sally, a government worker handling satisfaction and recruitment for the current war. The war is between humans and aliens, and the only people allowed to fight in the war are women, for an unknown reason. To encourage more people to join in the war effort, Sally must poll the mothers of the girls who have gone up to fight on their satisfaction every day, with the aim of publicizing the information and demonstrating the positive experience that comes with sending your daughter off to fight. The protagonist awaits the return of her daughter, Rachel. To appease the protagonist, Sally shows her pictures every day of the place where Rachel is staying. The mother notices oddities in the picture: Rachel's never in them, the decor isn't what she would've liked, the windows are missing. Sally brushes these comments off. One day, photographs are leaked of some of the female soldiers who belong to Rachel's troop engaging in acts of unnecessary violence. The photos are purged from the internet, but people still discuss them. The mother is unsure of what to make of those. News also spreads of the strange state that the female soldiers have assumed after coming into contact with the alien; Sally admits to nothing. In the end, Sally volunteers no new information to the mother. The mother is left with nothing to do but sit with Sally, as she does every day, and wait for Rachel to come home.
