Plot Summary
A fifteen-year-old girl hangs out with her two best friends, Jasmine and Michael, at a pool. All three children are Black; Jasmine makes fun of Michael for applying sunscreen, saying it's for white people. The girl recounts her first kiss, which happened suddenly and without consent, and the first time she was touched at age 11. When Michael is around, he protects the girls from predatory men. Michael and his brother Ron invite the girls to the movie theatre. There, Jasmine sees Eddie with his girlfriend, Cindy. Jasmine had lost her virginity to Eddie, but instead of dating her like he'd promised, he dated Cindy. Upset, Jasmine vows to head to the city on the weekend to find better men. The three friends borrow IDs for the club, but Michael is turned away at the door, leaving the girls without protection. While clubbing, Jasmine is invited to an afterparty with a car full of older men, forcing the unwilling girl to tag along. On the elevator ride up, ignoring a man's stares, the girl feels angry at the prospect of losing her virginity to who she refers to as 'a random guy in the Bronx' because of Jasmine's antics. She runs out and begs Michael to come get her via payphone. When he comes, she angrily tells him to leave Jasmine behind. That night, at Michael and Ron's, the girl allows Ron to take her virginity, not because she's excited about it, but because she believes that this is the safest way to lose it, as opposed to Jasmine's way. Afterwards, for comfort, she climbs into Michael's bed. Michael thinks she means something by that action, and they begin to kiss. He stops and turns away when he notices her bra clasp is undone, and that she won't tell him what happened.
