Plot Summary
After spending less than a year in New York City working as a janitor for the Webster Corporation, Michael Pegnam gets asked to work on a Saturday for no pay. He goes, glad to step out of his daily routine. It is one of the first warm days of the year after winter. He spends the morning filing papers, then his boss treated him and his colleagues to lunch. They go to a nice restaurant across the street, and Pegnam sits next to a coworker named Nancy, who he thinks is beautiful, but had never thought of talking to her before. They chat at lunch, with Pegnam getting drunk. Nancy tells him that her mother says not to drink before four o'clock. They head back to work, and Pegnam keeps drinking, which makes the day pass in a haze. At the end of the day, he meets up with Nancy and they go to Chinatown to eat. First, Nancy calls her mother to tell her that she will be back late. They talk, and Pegnam tells Nancy that after work he rides to the end of the subway line and gets something to eat, sometimes convincing truckers to drive him around the city and surrounding area. After eating, Pegnam doesn't have much money left, so they decide that the Staten Island ferry will be a cheap date. Pegnam checks the map he carries around with him, since he's still getting used to the city, then they head down to the ferry. On the boat ride, they snuggle and kiss and they yell goodbye to the Statue of Liberty. A younger couple comes onto the deck where they are, and Pegnam and Nancy make fun of them. When they arrive on Staten Island, neither Pegnam or Nancy had been there before, so the follow a crowd to a bus that takes them to a town square. There they see a diner. Pegnam decides to use his reserve money to buy them more food. Afterwards, they go to a nearby lodging house together and get a room, convincing the woman there that they are tourists from out of town. In the morning, they travel back to the city. Nancy invites Pegnam to have breakfast at her place. He asks about her mother, but she says that she was only pretending to live with her mother. They go and decide to marry each other, but nothing ever comes of it.
