Keith is a gay writer living in New York City. Keith met Adam, a Slovenian immigrant, and became friends with him. They sell stolen bicycles at Benny’s East Village bicycle shop after hours. One day, Adam hits Keith on the head so that he can steal the latter’s bike. When Keith comes to, he’s more hurt at the betrayal than stunned at his own injury. He goes to his boyfriend, Charlie’s, apartment to have his wounds treated.
Following the incident, Keith stands outside Benny’s shop, waiting for Adam. Adam never arrives. He goes to parties, where he retells the story of his injury to his friends, much to Charlie’s annoyance. He buys two books on Slovenia second-hand to learn more about Adam’s background. While reading one, he meets a girl, Grace, who used to own the same books. Keith is stunned by what a wonderful coincidence it is that he met the original owner of the books. He’s compelled to write a story, but when he shows it to Charlie, Charlie feels like he’s already read the same story before.
Not long after, the September 11 attacks happen. Keith wanders the streets, trying to see if he can catch any sign that Adam’s still alive–Adam worked in a coffee shop in the South tower. Keith wanders into a restaurant, where he skims pictures of the dead and recognizes an old friend of his. Suddenly, Adam walks into the restaurant. Keith doesn’t recognize him until Adam exclaims Keith’s name, overjoyed that his old friend is still alive.
