Doug and Danny are inseparable twins, constantly confusing family, friends, and even their own mother over who was who. However, Danny goes missing when he is only thirteen. Doug can't forget where Danny disappeared—the culvert, a mysterious place where tunnels appear anew each day and the boys escaped to play together. One day, the culvert shifted their surroundings, separating them from one another forever. Doug emerged; Danny didn't. Since then, Doug's life has been a wreckage of failed careers, broken marriages, and lost sense of self. Doug desperately revisits the culvert regularly, but no tunnels have appeared since that day. He has lost his identity and confesses he doesn't know which of the two twins truly escaped the tunnels, or if he ever had a brother at all.
