A teenaged girl recounts the bliss she felt after meeting the love of her life, Lygia, recalling moments such as their prom night together, where they were crowned queen and queen. Lygia recently died of cancer.
She meets another girl at school, Roberta, with whom she begins a whirlwind relationship. The girl buys Roberta orange perfume and red lipstick that Lygia used to love, only vaguely realizing or caring that Roberta suffers from what seems to be an eating disorder. When she shows up at Roberta's house to take her to prom, Roberta emerges looking exactly like Lygia. The narrator begins yelling Lygia's name and is taken to a mental hospital.
