Plot Summary
Drudging through his days as a janitor, an obese, middle-aged man, nicknamed Pinky, yearns to experience love for the first time. One day, while shopping at the grocery store, he notices a slight, middle-aged woman and becomes enamored with her. When he sees the woman struggling with her groceries, Pinky offers her a ride home, but the woman declines. Days go by, and Pinky sees no sign of the woman. His mind, however, is filled with possibilities. Then, when he spots the woman outside on a nearby lawn, Pinky realizes they are neighbors. He introduces himself and learns her name is Rose. Rose asks Pinky some questions about lawn maintenance, and he answers them eagerly. When he says goodbye, he offers to help Rose with anything she needs. She says she’s not looking for a romantic partner. They agree to be neighbors. Rose, it turns out, has endured her own share of grief. Cheated on by three different husbands, she has become bitter and cynical. But she warms to Pinky, and they become friends. They eat melon at the park, grocery shop together, and even stop by the high school where Pinky works. Rose greatly influences Pinky. She eats healthily, and Pinky begins to as well. Pinky notices that since meeting Rose, he has lost weight. One day, while he walks arm-in-arm with Rose, Pinky realizes that love may not be what he imagined it to be. It is filled with uncertainty and heartbreak. Pinky questions whether he and Rose will influence each other for the better. He resolves to wait and see.
