Plot Summary
A woman lines up at the American Embassy to seek asylum after tragic events alter her life direction. She begins to tune out the world around her, as she experiences flashbacks that detail her trauma. In these flashbacks, her husband had written a pro-democracy article in a local Nigerian newspaper, accusing the government of fraud. He received an anonymous call that said soldiers were coming to arrest and possibly murder him. His fear lead him into hiding, and later escape, with the help of his wife. More flashbacks show the wife being assaulted in her own home by drunken Nigerian soldiers in search of her husband. Ugonna, their 4 year old son, bawled in fear and was shot in the chest by a soldier in drunken annoyance. As the soldiers quarreled about what they've done, the woman escaped off of her two-story balcony. As she mentally returns to the outside world, she finds herself inside of the American Embassy being questioned for proof of government interference by an American with no regard for or understanding of her culture. Watching her Nigerian statesmen beg for their "freedom" from Americans who don't seem to care about it at all becomes a moment of clarity for her. Both frustrated and possibly inspired, she exits the Embassy.
