Plot Summary
As the previous teacher comes down with a bad cough, Ms. Ferenczi steps in as the substitute teacher of an academic class in Five Oaks, Michigan. Ms. Ferenczi is rather odd; she tells the students not to stare and introduces herself with a story about her family’s origins. She teaches the elementary-grade class according to the ordinary lessons, but adds her own flair by making strange remarks about how numbers in higher mathematics have fluid values and that six times eleven does not always equal sixty-six. Lunchtime rolls around and the children notice Ms. Ferenczi eat a lunch as peculiar as her personality. During their history lesson on Egypt, Ms. Ferenczi talks about the movement of souls in Egypt as well as her own adventures in the country. The next day, Ms. Ferenczi is back and continues her wayward method of teaching by telling stories about meat-eating trees and how angels are not invisible to everyone. The original teacher, Mr. Hibler, returns but acts without much interest in what lessons Ms. Ferenczi had taught. His lessons continue as they did before Ms. Ferenczi’s arrival. Ms. Ferenczi comes back several weeks later, however, and rewards the students for their pleasant company with a box of Tarot cards. She tells a few student’s about their futures. When she gets to Wayne Razmer, he gets a Death card and Ms. Ferenczi frankly tells him he will die soon. In a shock, Wayne tells the school principal of the incident and Ms. Ferenczi is asked to evacuate the school. The narrator taunts Wayne for being overly sensitive and gets in a fight with him over Ms. Ferenczi’s forced leave. Nonetheless, the students continue on with their studies in the mundane manner that they endured before ever meeting Ms. Ferenczi.
