Plot Summary
When Susan was young, her and her friends often teased boys who were standing on the sidewalk while they drove by. Though her friends preferred to go for boys who were troublemakers, Susan was always interested in the shy, kind ones. Now an adult, Susan meets a young doctor named Elijah at an art gallery. They date for some time, but Elijah does not seem too interested in her. When he first hears her sing in the choir, however, Elijah falls in love, and the two get married shortly after. A few months later, Susan and Elijah take a trip to Prague, where Susan plans on getting pregnant. They visit a chapel decorated with cherubs, which inspires the name they soon choose for their baby, Raphael. On the street, they run into a woman speaking in Czech, poking them to get their attention. Though Susan does not understand Czech, she believes that the woman is speaking to her, telling her she will soon become pregnant, have strange dreams, and grow jealous of her husband. Susan moves away from her and is suddenly knocked over by a tram. Elijah is very worried, but Susan gets up and insists she is fine. They go to a cafe, where Susan tells her husband about the woman's message. Elijah is worried and confused and takes his wife back to the hotel. Susan does get pregnant soon after. When the baby is born, Susan and Elijah develop a routine where they take turns feeding the baby. Susan sees Elijah feeding the baby one day, however, and becomes anxious and upset, though she is not sure why. She yells at her husband, demanding that she be the one to feed the baby because she is his mother. Elijah puts the baby in his crib and leaves angrily. When he returns, he is covered in bruises and blood, smiling triumphantly. He tells her that he went for a walk and felt like he wanted to kill someone, when he saw two men assaulting a woman on the street. Elijah fought the men, breaking one's jaw, while the woman ran away. Susan is not sure if she believes the story, but she washes her husband's face and puts him in bed. In the hallway, she believes she hears a voice, but her husband and child are both asleep.
