A woman in her forties lives alone, but her husband, who recently left her for another woman, comes over to make dinner every Tuesday. Hassan—still her husband, since they are not yet divorced—still has a key and lets himself in to cook so that dinner is ready by the time she gets home. Each week the couple catches up over dinner. Hassan talks about his job where he arranges conferences and hosts business professionals and government officials, and the woman tells him about the surgeries she assists with as a nurse at a hospital.
The couple was happily married for twenty years, and a few of those years were spent at Hassan's family home in Iran during the Iranian Revolution. Despite the political turmoil, Hassan, a bold and impulsive man, was never particularly careful and often put himself at risk by making jokes or loud remarks. On one occasion, Hassan is taken in by secret police for questioning, and his family worries that he will not return home. He does arrive back safe, and eventually, after being denied an exit visa, the couple illegally cross the border to Turkey and return to America. Though she acknowledges that America is much safer, the wife never stops worrying about Hassan after these incidents.
During one of their dinners, Hassan tells his wife that his girlfriend Monica is concerned about his drinking and has asked him to quit. His wife knows that he drinks heavily, which often gets him into trouble at work when he takes clients out for drinks. Hassan tries briefly to quit drinking, and because the Alcoholics Anonymous meetings are on Tuesday nights, he invites his wife to come with him. The two attend a meeting together but soon, unable to contain their laughter, they leave and return to the parking lot. There they hold hands, the wife fixated on his hand in hers, Hassan complaining about his love which always leaves him hurt.
