John Ferris wakes up from a dream and goes to get breakfast. He is set to fly to Paris very soon. His father has recently died, and though it appears that it was expected, he still feels a lot of shock and a sense of displacement as he moves throughout the world. Many of the people with whom he grew up are dead.
At the diner, he sees his ex-wife, Elizabeth, through the window and feels a strong connection to her, though they fell out of love a long time ago. John doesn't confront her. Instead, he goes back to his hotel. He is in love with another woman.
John calls Elizabeth and sets up dinner with her and her new husband before he flies to Paris. He goes over to their apartment and chats with her husband and son. Elizabeth is very upset to hear that John's father has died, as she loved him very much. For the first time, she explains to her son that she was married to John before she was married to her new husband.
She plays the piano for him and at dinner, he answers questions about his new lover, who is married and has a child, though he claims they will be married soon. He flies to France the next day.
For the first time, John tries to connect with his lover's son. He asks John if John's father is alright, but instead of answering, John tries to tell the boy about all of the trips they are going to take together. He grieves the passage of time and how it changes everything in its path.
