Plot Summary
Sarah and her significant other, Nick, are leading a group of climbers back down Mount Everest on a climbing expedition. As they are descending in the cold, Sarah feels a shift in the air and watches with horror as one of their fellow climbers, Jakub, slides down the mountain beside her. He stays silent as gravity pulls him into the abyss. The image haunts her, but she knows that hundreds of people die climbing the mountain and that she can’t live in that terrible moment of him dying. Next, as they are tied together, Sarah watches as Felix, a normally solo climber, falls off a cliff screaming for his life. He pulls Sarah with him as he falls, but she is able to get back up with the rest of the climbers. They are all in the Death Zone, a portion of the mountain that is notoriously difficult to traverse, and as the snow begins to fall more heavily she begins to get nervous. She can’t see Nick in the gloom, but she knows he’s there. Another guide, Pasang, is more experienced and is helping some of the climbers that they are with, but Nick is the one in charge. Sarah realizes that it will have to be Nick to tell Jakub’s family that he died. They continue hiking and come to the south face of Annapurna, the most dangerous part of the trek and Sarah begins to worry about making it down at all. As the snow becomes more wild, she feels as if the mountain is fighting against them and the climbers’ descent becomes less structured. She hears a scream and she knows it is the climber, Acke. She calls for him and finds him on his knees and his mouth covered in blood. He seems to be going crazy and tells Sarah to stay with him as there is movement behind her. Suddenly an avalanche of snow surrounds her. She wakes up upside down and struggles to dig herself out of the snow. To keep her from panicking she tries to think of Nick and when they met and how long they’ve been together. She remembers him talking about spirits that will lead her to safety and she begins to cry because she feels hopeless. She switches her focus to getting out of the snow and finally breaks free. As she gets out she slowly reorients herself, but can hear Acke screaming somewhere beneath her in the snow. She stays silent so as not to give him false hope of survival. After a while Pasang finds her and asks her where everyone else is. She says that some of the others have died. He then asks her why she keeps coming up the mountain, and she says it's because of Nick. She begins to trek down as Pasang returns up the mountain to help some other climbers. She eventually finds Kate, who is crying at the loss of the others. Sarah gets her to focus and the two begin to climb down together. They find Nick underneath a cliff face and together they decide to keep climbing down as no one is coming to help them. They have to climb down a serac which can collapse at any moment, and they do so slowly and carefully. Sarah reminisces about how close she and Kate used to be, until Kate’s husband died and Kate slept with Nick. Suddenly, Sarah feels another shift in the air and she pushes Kate to go faster down the mountain. They begin to run as the serac begins to collapse. Sarah sees after a blur that Kate and Nick are still alive and Kate says to Nick that she could feel Sarah with her. Suddenly Sarah realizes that she had actually died when Felix fell into the cliff and that she is now forced to stay on the mountain because it is Nick’s home and she is the spirit guiding him to safety.
