Plot Summary
Marissa and Brandon stay at Brandon's childhood ranch in Wyoming. Brandon's father recently died, and Brandon has returned to settle the farm's finances. Brandon and his brothers had not had a good relationship with their father, who was a cruel and violent man. One night, headlights appear outside and four people pile out of a Jeep Cherokee: an older man, two younger men, and a woman. The older man introduces himself as Dwayne Pingston; he used to work on the ranch for Brandon's father. One of the younger men is Tater, Dwayne's son, and the other young man is Dwayne's friend Wade. The woman is Peggy, Dwayne's wife. The four people push themselves into the house, despite Brandon's protestations. Dwayne explains to Marissa and Brandon his situation: six years ago, Dwayne had tried to quit his job working for Brandon's father. Out of spite, Brandon's father had reported Dwayne to the police for the theft of his Power Wagon and also pinned a bank robbery on Dwayne. In prison, Dwayne shared a cell of Wade. Now, Dwayne and Wade are out, and Dwayne wants the Power Wagon as retribution for Brandon's father's actions. Brandon is relieved that Dwayne only wants the Wagon. Dwayne, Brandon, and Wade walk out to the farm shed. The Wagon is there, but Dwayne and Wade grow furious when they can't find a toolbox inside the Wagon. Wade beats Brandon up, asking him where the box is, and Brandon tells him he has no idea. Brandon wakes on the floor of the shed the next morning. He sees Dwayne's body hanging out of the Wagon, and outside the shed, he finds Peggy and Tater's bodies. He is beyond relieved to find Marissa still alive. Brandon fixes up the Power Wagon, and he and Marissa leave the farm in it. Marissa carries a box of baby mice on her lap, and when Brandon notices the box, he pulls over. When they look inside, they see that the paper around the mice are bands which used to hold money together. Brandon puts the pieces together: this was where the cash from the bank robbery Dwayne was accused of used to be, and Dwayne had told Wade about the money in prison. When they found the money wasn't in the Wagon, Wade lost his temper and killed Dwayne and his family.
