Plot Summary
Matt, a retired CIA operative begins speaking to a class about his experiences in the field. He grew up wanting to fight for his country, but he didn’t want to join the military like his father. As a writer, he wanted to join the CIA as an analyst. After interviewing with the CIA, they ask him to do the job of spreading plagues and starting epidemics in places that the agency wants “destabilized”. He details his struggle with this job because he couldn’t touch or be near people that he loved without watching them die almost immediately. He missed out on dates with women he’s interested in because he doesn’t want to hurt them, and he missed his father’s funeral. On one mission, he came across a little boy in the town of Zaquitos who reminds him of a friend from his childhood. He saw the boy beg and ask for money and instantly felt bad for him. He had the agency wire him $500 and brought it to the boy’s family, urging them to leave town. He rode the train with them out of town and then began his mission of spreading a disease. Matt continues to tell his story to the class and says that he wonders what would happen if someone were to turn the tables on the U.S. and start an epidemic to destabilize and kill Americans.
