Plot Summary
Joseph and Case are two 19-year-old Mormons on a mission to win over and baptize as many converts as possible. The two elders attempt to persuade a homeless man, Claude, to visit the Church, but he isn't easily convinced. To impress the man, the boys smoke cigarettes and swim in the river with him. Joseph is unable to look away from Case's naked body. Joseph gets injured when he jumps from a cliff into the river.
Back at the studio apartment where they live together, Case applies butter on Joseph's bruises and assures him that it will help reduce the swelling. Joseph feels his heart flutter again. They have a short conversation about each of their families and then go to sleep.
The next day, Case and Joseph rode by bike to find more people to convert. Case succeeds in bringing an old woman named Ida to the Church. Meanwhile, Joseph's doubts about Case's methods continue to grow, but he still can't help his attraction towards Case and his charm. After they leave Ida's house, the boys visit the house of a young woman named Margo. Case flirts with Margo and then has sex with her. Joseph's sense of helplessness and despair peaks, and he decides to do whatever it takes to be good at his job to be noticed by Case.
