Plot Summary
A little boy walks into a diner for some apple pie and conversation. He starts talking to the waitress, Tammy, and slowly reveals that he's had thousands of conversations with her that she's never remembered. The boy is actually an alien from another part of the universe and he's come to tell her the world will end tomorrow, for the thousandth time. In her shock, he explains that Earth is stuck in a time loop and doomed to repeat the nuclear apocalypse started by world leaders over and over again. But this time is different: this is the boy's last time visiting the diner because his species, who has spent centuries studying the time loop, has decided their observations are over and that they've learned all there is to know from humans. The boy disagrees with his superiors and expresses reluctance towards leaving because he believes there is more to discover about what he calls "the human condition." He asks Tammy one final question: What would she do if she knew the world was ending tomorrow? Instead of giving one of the same six responses she's always given, she answers with something new. She decides to quit the diner and live her life, leaving to find one of her customers who the boy revealed frequents the diner because he is in love with her but never had the courage to confess. The waitress's choice to live her life to the fullest in the world's final moments in this timeline gives the boy a sense of renewed hope about humanity as he says goodbye.
