The mother has been with her new husband for about a year by the time they go over to a friend’s for a Labor Day dinner. From her previous marriage, she has two daughters, now both teenagers, whom she has brought along with her to such a gathering. On the way there, however, their relationship is slightly, already strained—and such a strain begins to wear on the lives of each of those present at the friend’s house.
