Plot Summary
The enviable man pursues the girl even though she’s not the prettiest among her sisters. The enviable man’s cousin, meanwhile, watches them with jealousy. He wonders how he can get in between his cousin and the girl he wants. He hopes to catch her with another man or otherwise find something incriminating from her.
One night, the cousin hangs by the creek to watch the girl. He watches her come out from the oak trees in a pale dress. Soon enough, the girl sees the cousin. She pulls her dress off in front of him, which flusters him. However, she soon reaches for her throat, sinks her fingers into it, and pulls away until her body splits in half. All that’s left standing is her skeleton.
The cousin runs away, yelling that there’s a monster. He yells that it’s the girl and cries about all the horrible things that she will do on the loose. Eventually, he topples over, foams at the mouth, and becomes a statue of salt. In the morning, the enviable man says that he’s doomed. Together, all his cousins mourn him in a circle around his salt statue. They attribute last night’s incident to a dog with rabies. They don’t believe in monsters. Meanwhile, the girl sits on her porch with her sisters, doing needlework.
