Plot Summary
After a car accident, Angela waits in her adopted sister Delia’s hospital room with Orrin, Delia’s boyfriend. Despite Delia’s comatose state, Orrin is optimistic, bringing Delia gifts, reading her stories, and making promises for when she wakes up. In search of a wife, Delia’s doctor, Dr. Menezies, makes unwanted advances on Angela when Orrin is out of earshot. Although Delia is still a teenage girl, Dr. Menezies tries to comfort Orrin and Angela but stares at Angela uncomfortably long. Orrin has difficulty remaining calm about the situation, especially since he previously proposed to Delia and had yet to receive an answer. Angela reflects on how she never saw her sister get angry, but Delia worried about her sudden dark moods. Angela takes Orrin home, and the doctor tries to confirm that he will be seeing Delia at a party on Sunday. On Sunday, Angela attends a dinner with her adopted family. Her father praises Dr. Menezies, who later watches Angela play the piano and cheers passionately. When the two are left alone, the doctor tries to make another advance, touching Angela’s hair and neck and even kissing the side of her head. He asks Angela what she plans to do after she graduates from high school and says she should find a job or a husband, rather than making her parents spend so much money on her schooling. Angela is at a loss for what to do and thinks back to her traumatic past in Bangladesh, which she can barely remember.
