Leo is a 59-year-old husband and father living in New York. He worries about his son, Harry, who recently graduated from college and does nothing all day. Harry is frightened that he’ll get drafted into the army; he claims that he’ll move to Canada if that happens. He watches the news, and it scares him, but nobody else in the family, especially Leo, seems to understand his hesitation. Leo is stressed out for his son, but they can’t connect. Harry becomes violent, threatening to murder Leo when Leo opens a letter that came for Harry from a girl named Edith. Harry escapes the house, but Leo follows him. The son arrives at the beach, where he steps into the water while his father watches.
