Plot Summary
Mevrouw Haming's two English children cannot decide about the Nazi regime, bringing her constant grief as a result. Her daughter, Katrien, loves a Nazi soldier yet is beginning to question his faith to the motherland. One day, Katrien finds herself ice skating with her sweetheart, Hans, when they both trip and fall atop one another. Hans kisses her, and she tries to fight him off, but he continues to tear at her clothes. Katrien unleashes her frustrations about Hans's dedication to Hitler and he reveals he's been spying and wishes her and her family dead. Horrified, Katrien barely manages to fight him off and escape. Later, Nazi parachutists attack the city. One of them lands in their courtyard, and Katrien decides he must die. With her mother's help, they brutally murder the man, only to realize they now must hide his body or risk violent repercussions. With the help of their Jewish neighbors, they move his body into the abandoned well nearby and scrub the courtyard clean. Everyone swears they did the right thing and they will never speak of the events of the night to anyone. As the sun rises, the Jewish families return home, unaware that most of the city - in fact, most of the country - had just been taken by the Germans.
