Plot Summary
On a rainy spring afternoon, a nameless police chief and officer, Charlie, sit in their car with a man, the finder of a corpse. They wait for a fire truck to tow away the abandoned car by the body. The finder asks the Chief and Charlie why they do not just drive the car out themselves instead of waiting for the firetrucks. Charlie explains that the car may no longer be able to drive, and they must wait for a doctor to check the body first. The finder recounts the shock of finding the body while he and his wife were in the middle of a casual walk. The Chief angrily cuts in and says that the finder never should have touched the paper box, implying that the finder must have tampered with something around the corpse out of curiosity. The finder agrees. While playing a game of blackjack in the police car, the men discuss the details of the dead body. They imply it was a suicide, and the Chief continues to criticize the finder for pulling off the box to get a closer look at the body. The doctor arrives, and the police officers and the finder take him to see the body. The body lies supine beneath the car, and the head is hidden by an upended box with a hole in its flap. The doctor turns to the finder and comments on how he pulled off the box. The finder tries to explain that it was because they were not sure and wanted to check what it was. As a large truck mows across a marsh and through the forest to pull out the car, a large crowd gathers to watch. The Chief yells for them to get back since someone could be hurt, but they continue watching. When the Chief and Charlie drive away from the site and drop off the finder, they criticize the crowd that stayed just to catch a glimpse of the dead body. They then criticize the finder for actually moving the box to get a close-up. After dropping him off, the Chief and Charlie curse the finder for being sick and curious like everyone else.
