Plot Summary
In post-apocalyptic China, a mechanical dragon-horse creature is left in an abandoned museum. He was created in France, and offered to China as a symbol of peace between nations, which left him wondering about his identity, and whether France or China is his true homeland. As the only one left in the museum, he decides to leave it. He begins walking into the city, which is in complete ruin. He wonders what differentiates him from the other abandoned cars and forms of metalwork. The dragon-horse comes upon a friendly bat, who tells him that all the humans are gone, but the creatures that remain can do whatever they please. The bat, however, was attacked by an owl, and had to stop her journey. She hasn’t been able to find clean water, and so she has been unmoving and growing weaker. The dragon can release water from his nostrils as part of his performance when humans were around, so he gives the bat water. The two then begin journeying together, with the bat on the dragon’s back. The bat teaches the dragon how to tell a story. He pictures life in the city long ago when there were humans around. The dragon and bat exchange many stories, largely about the blurred lines between humans and AIs. Eventually, they come to a lake with lotus flowers in it, which both find very beautiful. The bat needs to fly over the lake to get to where she wants to go, so the two part ways. The dragon is drawn to the lake, even though he knows it might break him. He goes into the water and gets stuck in the mud. The bat comes back, having gotten lost as she was trying to cross the lake, and says she wishes she had fire to lead the way for everyone. The dragon creates fire, given that he still has a bit of kerosene from when he was originally created. When he does so, lights begin to pop up everywhere from other spirits, and the bat turns the dragon into a butterfly so he can fly with her. They fly until they reach the end of the world. A river lies between heaven and Earth. The bat tells the dragon to go across the river into heaven, and that the bat cannot go yet as she has some tasks to complete. The dragon goes into heaven, where he sees the mechanical creatures he used to know all ready to greet him.
