Plot Summary
A black angel, going by A., has been cast out of Heaven for trying to intervene in humanity's struggles. Once on Earth, in Harlem, A. sees a Palestinian boy named Tamee getting beaten up by a group of neo-Nazis. In response, she removes her trench coat to expose her remaining wing and fights the group of boys from the air. Once they have all been knocked out, A. uses her power, the Voice, to purify their hearts, singing to them and showering them in gold until their hateful ways disappear. The Voice comes at a cost, however, and in exchange A. takes on their pain. Because she has done this multiple times since coming to Earth, she has begun to grow bitter and vengeful. Some time later, A. is walking through Harlem when she finds herself in an immigrant community outside of her neighborhood. Before long, she sees men working for ICE escorting an entire building full of families into their trucks to be piled together and sent across the Mexican border. There, they will be sold or sent to American-owned factories as slave labor. This is ICE's new procedure now that the prisons are all overflowing. As A. watches the scene, the people begin to fall into a formation, trying to break through the line of officers. When the officers have just barely parted, the children begin to run through and escape. A. realizes that this was the plan all along: getting the children to safety. Unable to bear the sight any longer, A. unfurls her wing and begins attacking the officers. She never used to be an angel of vengeance, so her wings had never before been made of steel like theirs were, but her wing is now razor sharp. She fights the agents viciously, not caring whether or not they survive. Her wing is only able to block so many bullets, and she eventually begins to take shot after shot. She still manages, however, to rescue one remaining child who was not able to break through the crowd, and she escapes with her before falling into an alleyway. When A. awakes, she sees the child staring at her. A. tells the girl the story of how she came to Earth, and the girl thanks her savior for her heroic efforts. However, the girl's mother has still been loaded onto the trucks and sent away, so she now has nowhere to go. A. wonders what to do with the child and asks her her name, and the girl responds that her name is Angelica.
