Plot Summary
Eunice and her husband, Paul, are at the bar drinking martinis with their friend. Eunice is a well-known author and asks her friend for suggestions for her upcoming book. Eunice's book is about a woman who has married five times. In each marriage, the husband mysteriously passes away. All the husbands die in bizarre ways, such as cancer, a car crash, and drunkenness. Many people speculate that the woman murdered them, but there is no evidence. Eunice reveals that the story is based on a real woman that she met. The real woman is currently married to her fifth husband, and Eunice claims that the woman is not evil, despite Paul disagreeing with her. For Eunice's book, she wants to focus on the female character's marriage to her fifth husband. However, she doesn't want the husband to die immediately. In her story, each husband has lived for about five or six years after the marriage. Eunice admits that the fifth husband is exceptionally similar to Paul. Eunice also reveals that the husband doesn't take the woman's career seriously in the story. The friend notes that that is similar to Eunice's life as Paul doesn't take Eunice's career seriously. After Eunice's comment, the friend notices the tension between Paul and Eunice and tells the group to go dance. On the dance floor, the friend dances with Eunice. Eunice watches her husband as he eyes a blonde woman. The friend notes that Paul is a lusty man before she offers Eunice some ideas for her story. The friend says that in the story, the woman should not be involved in the death of her husbands. She just had a series of misfortunes. The woman now expects that when she marries, her husband will die. However, when the fifth husband doesn't die after six years of marriage, this causes the woman to have a mental breakdown. The woman doesn't want to kill her husband but expects him to die. The friend tells Eunice there should be a war in the story. The wife convinces her husband to go to fight in the most dangerous occupation: aviation. Eunice is shocked when the friend suggests this and tells the friend that Paul will be going into aviation. The friend had no idea, and Eunice reveals that she begged Paul not to do aviation. Since Paul is a college professor, he was deferred, but he insisted on going. The friend believes there is something more to this coincidence but drops the subject. Meanwhile, Paul begins to dance with the blonde woman.
