Plot Summary
An individual, known as Dr. Rosa Sobel, is advised by her doctor to keep a diary of her life to look back on and learn from. She talks about the patients that she has—those with suicidal tendencies, violent mannerisms, and autism. She diagnoses some of her patients just by thinking about them. Dr. Rosa Sobel is able to read her patient's minds.
The next day, she has a scope session with one of her patients with major depression—Ana Jest. She notices the lack of color in Ana's mind and thinks about her time in schooling and other examples of patients with this condition. She does not have a session with F. Sorde because he is still sedated.
Dr. Rosa scopes Ana once again and finds her dream about a wolf and a pancake pathetic. F. Sorde wakes up, but is too confused for a session. He talks about how he is in pain because of his cracked ribs and is somewhat paranoid. Dr. Rosa also scopes one of her autistic patients, who saw a sentence for the first time today.
On her holiday, Dr. Rosa stays with some friends. Afterwards, she scopes Ana and notices that she has improved. She is still thinking about the pancake, but seems to have stronger thoughts. Dr. Rosa recommends her hormone treatment. F. Sorde becomes paranoid that he will be prescribed electroshock and also doesn't realize he is going through the scope treatment. Dr. Rosa explains the process to him. While she looks into his mind, he tells her to "keep out" in his brain and eventually gets tired. After their session, she brings him tea and he asks him why he is in therapy. She believes him to be delusional.
Dr. Rosa talks with Dr. Nades about conscious resistance. Ana thinks about her family members and Dr. Rosa reads a book that Dr. Nades recommends.
F. Sorde becomes increasingly difficult to monitor. He refuses to think of things during his scope and becomes paranoid once again about electroshock. He begins arguing that Dr. Rosa is invading his conscious and unconscious without his permission. He tells her that he is afraid of losing all of his thoughts to electroshock.
F. Sorde thinks of a sex scene as a means of rebelling against his scope. However, when his mind wanders, Dr. Rosa sees a desk and a drawing—assuming he was once an artist of some sort. He explains it was part of his childhood. He asks for a playback of what he just thought of and she talks about all of the things they track during his scope. Ana has some difficulty with eating, but has entered therapy and is doing better. Dr. Rosa has difficulty understanding the book she received.
For two nights, Dr. Rosa does not journal. However, when she does, she explains the diagnoses she has received for F. Sorde. He has some trauma from childhood and that he dreamt of a bear, which he called "Dokkay." He tried to show it to her, but failed. However, he does show her an arrest that happens and the blood he focused on. She asks him to think of democracy and he shows her a high school classroom and his idea of a high school classroom.
Dr. Rosa finds herself somewhat upset after their conversation. She moves his bed to the non-violent ward and then talks with his neighbor—Professor Arca. F.S. talks about how Professor Arca had 60 electroshock treatments and Dr. Rosa talks about what they use that treatment for.
F.S. explains that he loves democracy and that he is a liberal. Dr. Rosa seeks advice, but does not go to Dr. Nades again. She talks about how he can't show this journal to others until they find a cure.
She stops writing in the journal when F.S. began to be dangerous to himself. She decides not to tell her doctor about it. She starts having strange thoughts and wants to help F.S.
Dr. Rosa does a lot of research about Professor Arca and how far back it was in the files. She lies to Dr. N about what she is doing and is guilty about it. She explains to F.S. that they saved tapes of his mind and then destroyed his mind. The tapes were to be used in teaching.
F.S. dreams of prison and is afraid of the death sentences that only doctors can give. Dr. Rosa plans on stretching out his diagnoses for as long as possible so he doesn't get wiped out. She dreams of bears and then decides that she is going to tell Dr. Nades that she is resigning to work at the Children's Hospital.
Dr. Rosa sees F.S. and tells him she's going to run an EEG on him. He has slight facial paralysis.
