Plot Summary
In an old city named Rer, time is counted differently: big events happen and time returns to Year One. Now, there are Aliens walking amongst them; they are supposed to look different but do not really. But things were different when Sov was young and living in the Ereb Tage with 140 others. Sov recounts memories of their childhood, from play fights with fellow playmates, to eating cake. At 14, one of Sov’s siblings stopped “going into kemmer” or being able to physically procreate, so a huge party is thrown. Gendered pronouns do not exist in this society, as genders fluctuate. Before coming of age, beings do not have gender or sexuality. Once they do, they regularly go to the kemmerhouse. As Sov is working in a workshop, they start becoming emotional, tired, and frustrated with another young coworker, Sether, who keeps bumping into them. They get sicker and their genitals start changing: Sov is in kemmer for the first time – and rejecting the idea. On the way to work, Sov and Sether discuss coming into kemmer, airing their fears and frustrations. Sov discusses their coming of age with their grandmother, saying they are not ready, and they decide Sov should spend a short time at the Fastness, where Sov learns discipline and chanting. Then, Sov goes to the kemmer-house, officially coming into kemmer. They enter the kemmer-house as a female. She recognizes her living space’s cook, naked and beautiful. They start getting intimate and she is attracted to him but he breaks away before long. She then spends time “playing” with a woman, before having sex with Arrad. Sov states that 50 years later, they don’t remember every partner from their first kemmer. Sether remained in Sov’s life, both in times of kemmer and not; love in all phases of life.
