Plot Summary
Although he doesn’t understand why, an unnamed boy notices how his whole neighborhood considers their grocery deliverer, Walter, to be a moron. The neighborhood boys constantly tease Walter, asking about his love life, which causes Walter to exclaim that he is going to get a girlfriend. While the boy’s mother is afraid of Walter, his grandmother comes to live with them and soon befriends Walter, as she has always been drawn to “peculiar” people. The boy’s grandmother requests for Walter to deliver their food from now on, and with Walter visiting their home every day, the boy’s grandmother has an easy time talking to him. She begins to help him with his goal of getting a girlfriend, giving him talks on how to talk to women and how to succeed in courtship. One day, while delivering the groceries, Walter mentions he has gotten a girlfriend, although he can’t remember her last name. The boy’s grandmother continues coaching Walter, and soon enough, he is getting ready to get married. However, the boy’s grandmother suddenly passes away in her sleep, and the boy’s mother tells Walter not to return anymore. The boy and his mother move away after the funeral, and the boy loses track of Walter. Unexpectedly, he runs into Walter much later and asks Walter if he remembers him. The boy asks Walter how his girlfriend is, and Walter begins to cry, saying she’s still alive.
