Plot Summary
A man named Mr. Fox walks the boardwalk in Brighton with his dog Anthony and notices that the waves look slightly different than they normally do. He dismisses the idea and goes to Mrs. Oldenshield’s to read a book he is working on — The Eustace Diamonds, by Anthony Trollope. He has a drink with the bartender, Harrison, who works in the inn that he lives in. The next morning there is a commotion near the boardwalk and more people than Mr. Fox normally sees. He hears from an African man that England has begun to move southwest through the Celtic sea and out towards the Atlantic, leaving Ireland behind. He continues about his days as normal, reading, watching the boys fly their kites in the cricket field, and then getting a drink with Harrison every night. However, things about his environment begin to change as the weather warms, the winds change, and the new lands appear on the horizon. While England moves, Mr. Fox gets a letter from his niece Emily who lives in a town called Babylon in the United States. She asks him to come visit her, but he does not want to go to America. In _The Eustace Diamonds, _a woman named Lizzie has been given diamonds by her deceased husband. The husband’s family attempts to get the diamonds back, declaring them a family heirloom, but Lizzie hides the diamonds and says that they are stolen. However, the diamonds end up actually getting stolen from her and are lost forever. Eventually, England approaches the United States and flips upside down as it nears the New York coastline. It settles there and Mr. Fox watches as waves of English citizens take ferries to America and Americans come to England. Among the departing English is Harrison, the bartender. On one of the ferries coming in is his niece, Emily, who meets him with her daughter, Clare. The three, plus Anthony the dog, spend the day together and Mr. Fox is glad to have seen them both. Emily and Clare depart that night and Mr. Fox waits for Harrison to return but he does not see him. The next day as tourists begin to travel back and forth, England begins to shift back towards the Southeast, possibly heading back to its original position, and Mr. Fox goes back to his daily routine.
